Fibonacci OTE Zone: How the 0.618–0.79 Retracement Works

Fibonacci retracement tools are often presented as if the market owes them respect. What they actually do is simpler: they divide the distance between a swing high and a swing low into fixed fractions and draw the resulting prices. The OTE zone - roughly 0.618 to 0.79 of the retracement - is a convention built on that arithmetic. It is worth understanding the calculation precisely, because the calculation is the only part that is certain.

Key takeaways

  • A retracement level is a fixed fraction of the distance between a swing high and a swing low.
  • For a bullish setup the entry price is H − (H − L) × r; for a bearish setup it is L + (H − L) × r.
  • The 0 and 1 levels are not approximations - they are the swing high and low themselves.
  • The 0.618–0.79 band is a convention, not a law; 0.705 is the calculator's emphasised midpoint.
  • The zone says where a retracement would be proportional. It says nothing about whether a retracement will happen.

What a retracement level is

Take a move from a low to a high. A retracement measures how much of that move price has given back, as a fraction of the total distance. The fraction is the only input. There is no fitting, no lookback window and no model.

Let H be the swing high, L the swing low, and r the retracement ratio between 0 and 1.

  • Bullish retracement (an up-move is being given back): Price(r) = H − (H − L) × r
  • Bearish retracement (a down-move is being given back): Price(r) = L + (H − L) × r

The two formulas are mirror images. In a bullish setup the zone sits below the high; in a bearish setup it sits above the low. Using the wrong one is the most common arithmetic error in fib tools, and it produces a zone on the wrong side of the market.

The Fibonacci OTE calculator implements exactly these two formulas in the browser. It takes the swing high and low and returns the 0, 0.618, 0.705, 0.79 and 1 levels for both directions, so the calculation can be checked rather than trusted.

The five levels, worked both ways

Use one swing for both directions: H = 68,000, L = 61,200. The range is 6,800.

Ratio Bullish price (retracement of the up-move) Bearish price (retracement of the down-move)
0 68,000.0 61,200.0
0.618 63,797.6 65,402.4
0.705 63,206.0 65,994.0
0.79 62,628.0 66,572.0
1 61,200.0 68,000.0

Read the endpoints first. At r = 0 the bullish price is the high and the bearish price is the low; at r = 1 they swap. That is the whole structure: the levels are not independent numbers, they are positions along one measured line.

The band between 0.618 and 0.79 is the OTE zone. On this swing it spans 63,797.6 down to 62,628.0 for a bullish setup and 65,402.4 up to 66,572.0 for a bearish one. The 0.705 level, 63,206.0 and 65,994.0 respectively, is the band’s emphasised midpoint rather than a level with a separate derivation.

Figure 1A bullish setup measures down from the high. The zone between 63,797.6 and 62,628.0 contains the 0.705 level at 63,206.0. The path drawn after the retracement is illustrative; the levels are the only calculated elements.

Why these ratios, and what the band means

The 0.618 ratio is the golden-ratio retracement, derived from the Fibonacci sequence. The 0.79 level is used in many fib tools as an extension of that family, and the 0.705 level is a convention that appears in retracement trading material as the middle of the zone.

None of these numbers has a mechanism behind it in the way that, say, a funding rate does. They are round divisions of a range that many participants watch. That shared attention can make the levels visible in price behaviour, which is a reason to know where they are, not a reason to expect price to stop at them.

The band rather than a line is the more honest construct. A single price is easy to miss by a tick; a range acknowledges that the exact level is a convention.

Bearish retracement of the same swing, mirrored 68,000 · 1 66,572 · .79 65,994 · .705 65,402.4 · .618 61,200 · 0 swing high swing low OTE band 0.618–0.79 The same levels, read from the other side. Using the bullish formula here would put the zone below the market.
Figure 2A bearish setup measures up from the low. The zone runs from 65,402.4 to 66,572.0, with 0.705 at 65,994.0. The two figures use identical inputs and opposite formulas.

The swing is the decision, not the arithmetic

The calculator needs a high and a low. Choosing them is the part that cannot be automated, and it is where most of the analytical work sits.

A swing that matters is usually the move you intend to trade: the impulse leg whose continuation a retracement would represent. A minor high inside a larger decline, or a low formed during a quiet range, will produce a perfectly calculated zone that has nothing to do with the trade.

Two habits keep this honest:

  1. Draw the swing on a higher timeframe and the entry on the lower one. The zone is defined by the larger move; the trigger is a local event.
  2. If several plausible swings give wildly different zones, write that down. A setup whose levels depend entirely on which anchor you pick is not a setup with precise levels; it is an ambiguous chart.

Invalidating the setup before it triggers

A retracement zone has a natural invalidation point: the swing extreme that defines it. If price trades through r = 1, the retracement has become a full reversal of the measured move, and the premise of trading its continuation is gone.

That gives a structural stop, which is more useful than a fixed percentage:

Direction Zone Invalidation (r = 1) Stop placement logic
Bullish 63,797.6 – 62,628.0 61,200 Beyond the swing low, with room for the spread
Bearish 65,402.4 – 66,572.0 68,000 Beyond the swing high, with room for the spread

The distance from the zone to the invalidation point is the risk unit. The position size calculator converts that distance and a chosen risk percentage into a quantity, which is the step that turns a level into a position.

Two execution details follow from the zone:

  • Entering inside the band usually means a resting limit order, which can pay the maker rate if it fills. The maker and taker guide explains when that holds and when a crossing order is charged as taker.
  • A limit order at a level is not guaranteed to fill, and a fill is not a confirmation. The spread and slippage guide covers what a thin book does to both.

What the zone cannot tell you

The arithmetic is exact; the interpretation is not. Four limits are worth stating plainly:

  • It does not predict a reversal. Price can pass through the entire band and continue.
  • It does not rank setups. A zone in a strong trend and a zone in a range look identical on the calculator.
  • It does not size the trade. The levels give a price and a structural stop; they say nothing about how much to risk.
  • It does not account for costs. Fees, spread and, on a perpetual, funding all sit between the entry and the target.

The fibonacci calculator handles the arithmetic and nothing else. That is the correct division of labour: a tool should do the part that can be computed, and leave the judgment visible.

Risk note. This article explains a geometric calculation and a common trading convention. It is not investment advice and not a claim that retracement levels produce profitable trades. The worked example uses a hypothetical swing and no live price. Leveraged positions can lose more than the margin posted, and past price behaviour does not constrain future price behaviour.

Frequently asked questions

What does OTE stand for?

Optimal trade entry. In retail technical-analysis education it refers to a retracement band, commonly between the 0.618 and 0.79 Fibonacci levels, where a trader looks for an entry in the direction of the prior move. The name describes a convention, not a verified optimum.

How is the 0.705 level calculated?

It is the same formula with r = 0.705: for a bullish swing, H − (H − L) × 0.705. With a high of 68,000 and a low of 61,200, that is 68,000 − 6,800 × 0.705 = 63,206. The level is a chosen convention inside the band, not a market constant.

Why are the 0 and 1 levels just the high and the low?

Because the formula multiplies the swing range by r. At r = 0 the retracement has not started, so the price is the swing high in a bullish setup; at r = 1 it has retraced the entire range, so it is the swing low. Those two levels are the endpoints that define the measurement.

Is the OTE zone a buy signal?

No. Reaching the zone means price has retraced a set fraction of the prior move. It does not mean the move will resume, and price can continue through the zone to the swing extreme and beyond. A trade still needs a stop, a size and a reason beyond the level being touched.

Which swing should I use?

The one that defines the move you are trading. Different anchor points produce different zones, and the calculator cannot choose for you. If two plausible swings give completely different levels, that disagreement is information about how ambiguous the setup is.
